PennHip Testing
What is PennHIP Testing?
PennHIP is an advanced, specialized screening method used to evaluate hip joint laxity. How loose or tight the hip joint is, which is an important predictor of a cat’s risk for developing hip dysplasia.
Unlike a traditional hip X-ray, which primarily evaluates the appearance of the joint, PennHIP uses three specific radiographic views to objectively measure hip laxity and provide a measurable score called the Distraction Index (DI).
Lower DI = tighter, more stable hips
Higher DI = greater joint laxity and increased risk for hip dysplasia
The procedure is performed under sedation by a veterinarian trained in the PennHIP technique.
Why PennHIP Matters for Maine Coons
Maine Coons are a large, slow-maturing breed with a known predisposition to hip dysplasia. Healthy hips are incredibly important to their long-term mobility, comfort, and quality of life.
PennHIP testing gives us valuable information that helps us:
● Make more informed breeding decisions
● Select breeding pairs with hip health in mind
● Reduce the risk and severity of hip dysplasia in future generations
● Give our kittens the strongest possible foundation for long, healthy lives
At Sugar Coons, we believe responsible breeding goes far beyond producing beautiful Maine Coons. Our breeding decisions are guided by extensive health testing, including hip evaluations, cardiac screening, and genetic testing.
We cannot eliminate every possible health condition, but by testing our breeding cats and making thoughtful decisions based on those results, we can work toward healthier generations of Maine Coons.
Our goal isn’t simply to meet basic breeding standards, it’s to continually raise the standard for the health and longevity of the breed we love.
